WIR-V1.3 | Production of products from recycled fibres

Objective

The WIR-V1.3 joint project advocates the substitution of fibres, where fibrous composites are based on recycled materials rather than virgin fibres. The development of market-relevant products simultaneously guarantees the purchase of recycled fibres. Potential products include stranded and flat semi-finished products made of staple fibres, which are processed into components for aviation, (special purpose) machine manufacturing as well as the construction industry using a matrix system. WIR-V1.3 thus makes an essential contribution to the real application of recycled fibres on the market with a focus on the region “Elbtal Sachsen”.

The objective is to open up the use of recyclates in the material cycle and to demonstrate it with selected examples. The partners address the complete or partial replacement of used virgin fibres with recycled fibre materials in order to produce semi-finished products that are suitable for the material cycle. For this purpose, it is necessary to further develop the available know-how and technologies from science and to transfer them to industry. Powerful partners from the region have joined forces in the alliance to map the value creation in a cooperative and complementary way.

Objective 1 – rCF bar and bar mat production: The objective is to implement the production of straight bars and bar mats as well as the forming of rCF reinforcing bars into stirrups and shaped parts using the relevant processes of the economic partners. At the end, the manufacturing process and the product bar or bar mat are available.

Objective 2 – rCF yarn laying + rCF warp knitting technology: The partners aim to produce carbon fibre mats from rCF yarns. The objective is to produce both 2D mat reinforcement and 3D lattice girders from the flat reinforcement. On the product side, connecting means for wall construction systems and a carbon concrete wall component will be produced.

Objective 3 – rCF components: The objective is to produce stranded and flat semi-finished products from rCF staple fibres. Semi-finished products are embedded in thermoset or mineral matrix systems and consolidated into components for aviation, (special purpose) machine manufacturing and construction sectors. The objective is to achieve a recycled content of at least 50 %, and preferably 100 %, of fibre materials used.

Objective 4 – Provision of data: The objective is to make the data collected in WIR-V1.3 on material flows, resource consumption and the characteristic values of the products available in a transparent manner. To this end, all data and characteristic values will be collected, processed and, in particular, shared and discussed with the parallel individual and joint projects in the WIRreFa project.

Objective 5 – Lower market barriers: The objective is to draw attention to the developments in WIR-V1.3 through transfer and marketing measures. Main goals are networking within the sectors and gaining new partners in the value chain. The focus is on the barrier-free transferability of the results and technologies to new raw material sources, suppliers or users. Primarily, cooperation with WIR-V1.1 and WIR-V1.2 is being promoted in order to strengthen the region.
