WIR-V1.5 | MultiMaterialRecycling – Recycling of multi-material components for the regional recycling of construction materials using the example of carbon concrete

Objective

The WIR-V.15 joint project implements a complete recovery of the individual materials in carbon concrete by using concrete with a proportion of up to 60 % recycled concrete chippings as well as reinforcement made of recycled fibres for the development of new products. This cross-sectoral approach is necessary to manufacture products sustainably. WIR-V1.5 thus makes an essential contribution to the concrete application of recycled fibres for market-relevant products, using existing synergies with carbon concrete construction in the region “Elbtal Sachsen” and building up synergies with new industries.

The objective is the design and recycling (R) of existing components made up of several components (multi-material components) and the return of the material components to a recycling cycle for new products. Carbon concrete is to be used as an example for this. The focus is on 1. the used concrete and 2. the reinforcement materials made of carbon fibres.

Objective 1 – Interface and process chain analysis in textile and concrete production: The partners define the requirement profile for a cross-process-chain resource- and cost-efficient use of materials and analyse the existing processes for this purpose. Based on this requirements profile and the further developments, an improved process chain is being developed in the form of a process chain model. This will be implemented in the course of further work and evaluated on market-relevant demonstrators.

Result 1: Requirement profile for cross-process-chain, resource- and cost-efficient use of material and improved process chains

Objective 2 – Development and production of R-concrete and R-textile reinforcement: The partners aim to produce R-concrete with up to 60 % recycled concrete chippings. R-concrete should be comparable to normal concrete in terms of properties (including compressive strength, durability) and be reinforced with continuous fibres. To achieve the goal, pure concrete developments are initially being carried out, which must fulfil both mechanical and processing requirements. Furthermore, studies will also be done on components with textile reinforcements made of continuous fibres. In addition, cut-free textile reinforcements made of R-continuous fibre yarns are being developed and produced. For this purpose, the existing production plant has to be adapted with regard to the requirements of the R-fibre yarns, especially concerning the feeding, impregnation and laying of the R-fibre yarn.

Result 2: R-concrete and R-textile reinforcement

Objective 3 – Development and production of composite components made of R-concrete and R-textile reinforcement and coordination of the process chains: For the modelling of the components, existing calculation models with the characteristic values of the R-materials are being further developed and validated by means of component tests. These processes and materials are tested and finally adjusted in a coordinated overall process chain. Based on the defined use cases, demonstrators are manufactured and tested on a large scale in the precast element plant.

Result 3: Components made of R-concrete and R-textile reinforcement and coordinated process chains
