WIR-B2 | The recycled fibre as a versatile raw material

Runtime finished

Significance for the region “Elbtal Sachsen”

WIR-B2 aims to derive requirements for recycled fibres for specific products. For this purpose, the requirements for the fibres and the quantitative demand for fibres of different qualities are to be determined together with the users. In addition, the current quality of fibre-containing waste in the region “Elbtal Sachsen” is to be recorded, as well as the extent to which recycled fibres can be integrated into the existing processes of regional companies. WIR-B2 identifies the key technologies to be addressed for the alliance, as well as the action guidelines for achieving the required fibre qualities.

Results to date

  • Identification and localisation of the bodies in the region “Elbtal Sachsen” and their interactions with each other, which have a connection to carbon fibres
  • Material flow model for the region “Elbtal Sachsen” to process data on carbon fibre-based material flows, their quality, and dependencies in the supply chain
  • Tool for calculating a component-specific life cycle assessment (LCA), enabling the comparison of the environmental impacts of using recycled carbon fibres versus new fibres
  • Questionnaire for the clear recording of the required key figures for the creation of a component-specific LCA
  • Recommendation for action regarding pyrolysis and solvolysis as key technologies for the processing of carbon fibres
