WIR-B1 | From recycled fibre to new product

Runtime finished

Significance for the region “Elbtal Sachsen”

WIR-B1 aims to develop approaches for products, based on the currently available qualities of recycled fibres, in which these fibres can be used in the near future. In this context, the focus is on the previously insufficiently considered but highly promising application in the mass market of the construction sector. WIR-B1 provides the alliance with initial concepts and specifications for processes, constructions, testing, etc., as concrete action guidelines to create a solid foundation for shaping new ideas and approaches.

Results to date

  • Creation of a comprehensive process chain along the material cycle of fibre-reinforced composites
  • Specification sheet for the circular management of carbon fibres, including suitable alternative actions for achieving an optimal utilisation pathway
  • Requirements profile for the production of semi-finished tools from recycled carbon fibres
  • Comparison between a potential reinforcement made from recycled carbon fibres and a commercially available mat-shaped reinforcement made from new fibres (tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, financial framework, etc.)
  • Numerical model in the FE programme ANSYS for validation and preparation, as well as for replacing tensile tests of mat-shaped reinforcements made from recycled fibres
